New Christmas Single - 'Carol of the Bells' 12.12.25
With their brand-new Christmas release, international trio Michell, Pfeiffer & Kulesh celebrate the season of peace and goodwill – in war-torn times. This exciting new arrangement by the multilingual trio and their producer Jason Emberton magically captures the song's international journey. Originally arranged by Mykola Leontovych in Ukraine as "Shchedryk", a traditional New Year's Eve carol, it crossed the Atlantic and was adapted by Peter J. Wilhousky into the present-day English-language Christmas anthem, "Carol of the Bells".
Daria Kulesh, born in Russia, sings the original Ukrainian lyrics - a gesture of solidarity with all those affected by war, and a plea for peace. The song also been adapted into other languages, such as Karen Pfeiffer's native German, with Odette Michell singing the English verses. The track even features a recording of church bells in Kyiv on 24th February 2022, the day marking the beginning of the largest conflict in Europe since WWII.
In the original Ukrainian, however, it's not the bells that bring glad tidings, but a humble little swallow who carries simple blessings to a village household – plentiful harvest and comfortable survival assured for the year ahead. People all over the world just want to live in peace with their families... With its driving energy, it's a song of bright hope and defiant joy.

About

Odette Michell (England) is an award-winning British folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who's sound is deeply rooted in the English folk tradition. Odette plays guitar, bouzouki and accordion and has played alongside Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman, as well as opening for the likes of Martin Carthy and Phil Beer. Her 2019 debut album 'The Wildest Rose' was met with critical acclaim, making several of the end of year best-of lists. Odette has since appeared at Celtic Connections, has headlined three solo UK tours and was winner of the 'Female Artist of The Year' at the 2019 FATEA Awards. www.odettemichell.com

Karen Pfeiffer (Germany) burst onto the British folk scene a few years ago as one half of the Anglo-German duo Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer. Having extensively toured their shows in the UK and around the world, Karen is wooing audiences not only with her natural theatricality and life affirming playful energy, but also with her “seriously impressive, mezzo-soprano voice: one that would not be out of place on the opera stage.” (The Living Tradition). The finishing touches to have audiences melt in her hands are her oatcake-induced Swabian-Staffordshire accent and her legendary German humour. www.paulwalkermusic.co.uk

Daria Kulesh (Russia) has been described by Mike Harding as “one of the finest voices and one of the most intriguing and interesting songwriters on the present folk scene”. Mixing her Eastern roots with Western folk influences, she creates an original and exciting sound, full of passion and magic. Born in Russia but based in the UK for the last 15 years, she fearlessly explores her heritage and turbulent family history in Ingushetia (North Caucasus) with songs that "aren't just sung, but lived". She has toured extensively and has three award-winning solo albums to her name. www.daria-kulesh.co.uk
